Located in Northwest Washington, the president spent approximately 22 months in the 19th century version of “Camp David.”

The family occupied the residence during three Civil War summers; there, Lincoln spent time with the soldiers; women and children. He also composed a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 by the actor John Wilkes Booth; he died the following day.
