James Abram Garfield (1831-1881) was the 20th president. He purchased his home in 1876 to accommodate his large family.
Inaugurated on March 4, 1881, Garfield was assassinated the following September. Chester Alan Arthur succeeded him. Four years later, a library wing was added to the estate by Mrs. Garfield, which–it is believed–set the precedent for future presidential libraries.
